A1 LESSON 11: CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS-COSTUMBRES Y TRADICIONES

CUSTOMS and TRADITIONS

READING COMPREHENSION

CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD- Traduce el texto

Traditions are rituals and beliefs that form a part of our culture. We practice traditions to remember our history, and pass it  down from generation to generation. Some traditions are widespread and adopted by one and all, like celebrating Christmas and birthdays, and then there are some that are quite strange or interesting, and practiced only by a small group of people. Here are some interesting traditions from all over the world that are informative and amusing at the same time.

GERMANY

Family members and friends of future married couples meet at dinner, and break a lot of porcelain (except glasses). The couple is then asked to clean up the entire mess. This is supposedly to teach them the importance of unity and hard work, and bring good luck. Germans think this tradition is essential in making marriages last a lifetime.

DENMARK

In Denmark, they have an interesting yet strange tradition of throwing cinnamon to people who are still single at 25. The individual is doused with lots of cinnamon sticks on his/her birthday, mostly by friends and well-wishers. It’s interesting because it motivates you to look for a partner before you turn 25. If you like cinnamon though, then this shouldn’t bother you.

INDONESIA

Teeth sharpening or chiseling is a strange beauty ritual practiced by women in Indonesian rural communities. It involves sawing of the teeth, and women who undergo teeth chiseling are considered extremely beautiful. Thankfully though, this isn’t a mandatory requirement for all women.

DIWALI

Hi my name is Layla and I live in London. My favorite festival is Diwali the Festival of Lights .It is an autumn festival and celebrates the Hindu New Year and the victory of Good over Bad. People celebrate Diwali all over the world in Canada,  Asia,  Britain and Africa. The celebrations last for 5 days. During Diwali I always get up very early but I don't go to school. On the first day we clean the house then we decorate the house and the garden with lots of lights. We wear new clothes and go and visit our friends and family and give them presents.  After that we prepare the food and drinks for the big party. At the party we don't eat meat and we don't drink alcohol. We have vegetarian food. It's delicious!!!
People dance and there are fireworks, lights and lots of sweets for the children. It's a beautiful celebration.!

THE TIME

Para aprender la hora en inglés vamos a dividir imaginariamente al reloj en DOS PARTES. Observa el diagrama:

 1.        Cuando es la hora “justa” decimos o´clock:    ej.    8:00. It´s eight o´clock

2.         Si es la hora pasada, es decir la aguja mayor se encuentra en la mitad derecha del reloj decimos “past”. Primero los minutos y luego la hora, Estudia el ejemplo:

8:10 It´s ten (minutes) past eight

3.         Si nos referimos a la hora siguiente, es decir, la aguja mayor se encuentra en la mitad izquierda del reloj decimos “to”. Primero los minutos que faltan para la hora siguiente. Estudia el ejemplo:

                             8:40 It´s twenty to nine.

NOW   PAY ATTENTION:

Twelve fifteen OR a quarter past twelve/    Twelve thirty or Half past twelve

AHORA OBSERVA  LOS RELOJES Y ESCRIBE LA HORA
